ADSL is Dead: Everything you need to know about switching

ADSL has served South Africans for many years, but it is no longer the best way to stay connected.

ADSL runs on old copper telephone lines, and these networks are being phased out in many areas. This means customers still using ADSL should start looking at newer internet options such as Fibre, Fixed LTE, or 5G.

The good news? Switching is easier than you may think.

Why Is ADSL Being Phased Out?

ADSL uses copper telephone infrastructure. This older network is more difficult to maintain and is not designed for the way we use the internet today.

Modern homes need faster, more reliable connections for:

  • Streaming
  • Video calls
  • Working from home
  • Online gaming
  • Smart TVs and connected devices
  • Cloud storage and backups

Fibre, Fixed LTE, and 5G are better suited to these needs.

What Are My Options?

The best replacement for ADSL depends on what is available at your address.

Fibre

Fibre is usually the best replacement for ADSL where it is available.

It offers:

  • Faster speeds
  • Better stability
  • Lower latency
  • Uncapped package options
  • A better experience for streaming, gaming, and working from home

If Fibre is available at your address, this will normally be the recommended option.

Fixed LTE

Fixed LTE is a wireless internet option that uses a mobile network.

It may be a good option if:

  • Fibre is not available at your address
  • You need a quicker installation option
  • You do not want to wait for Fibre trenching or installation
  • You use the internet mainly for browsing, streaming, email, and general home use

Fixed LTE availability depends on network coverage in your area.

5G

5G is another wireless internet option and can offer fast speeds in areas with good 5G coverage.

It may be suitable if:

  • 5G coverage is available at your address
  • You want a wireless alternative to Fibre
  • You need faster speeds than traditional LTE can usually offer

Coverage and performance can vary by location.

How Do I Check What Is Available?

You can check availability on the Webafrica website.

Enter your address on the coverage map to see which internet options are available at your home.

Depending on your location, you may see Fibre, Fixed LTE, 5G, or a combination of these services.

What Happens If Fibre Is Available?

If Fibre is available at your address, you can place an order online.

The installation process depends on whether your home already has Fibre installed.

If Fibre Is Already Installed

Your order may be processed as an existing line activation or switch.

If the line is currently with another ISP, the current ISP must first cancel and release the line before Webafrica can activate it.

If Fibre Is Not Installed Yet

A Fibre installation will need to be arranged.

The Fibre Network Operator, also known as the FNO, will handle the physical installation. Installation timeframes can differ depending on the provider, area, and availability of installation teams.

What Happens If Fibre Is Not Available?

If Fibre is not available at your address, you can check whether Fixed LTE or 5G is available.

These services do not use copper telephone lines and are often quicker to get connected.

Do I Need to Cancel My ADSL First?

Do not cancel your existing service too early.

Before cancelling, make sure that:

  • You have checked what services are available at your new address
  • You understand the installation or activation timelines
  • Your new service has been ordered
  • You know when your current service should be cancelled

Cancelling too soon may leave you without internet while your new service is being installed or activated.

Can I Keep My ADSL Router?

Usually, no.

ADSL routers are designed for copper telephone line connections and may not work with Fibre, Fixed LTE, or 5G services.

Your new service may require a different router or device.

If Webafrica supplies equipment for your new service, follow the setup instructions provided with your order.

Will My Internet Be Faster?

In most cases, yes.

Fibre, Fixed LTE, and 5G are generally better suited to modern internet use than ADSL.

Your actual speed will depend on:

  • The package you choose
  • The technology available at your address
  • Network coverage
  • WiFi signal inside your home
  • The number of connected devices
  • The device you are using

What Should I Choose?

Here is a simple guide:

Choose Fibre if it is available and you want the most stable long-term option.

Choose Fixed LTE if Fibre is not available or you need a wireless home internet option.

Choose 5G if it is available in your area and you want a faster wireless option.

Quick Summary

ADSL is old technology and is being phased out in many areas.

The best thing to do is check what newer internet options are available at your address and switch to Fibre, Fixed LTE, or 5G.

Fibre is usually the best choice where available. If not, Fixed LTE or 5G may be a suitable alternative.
