How Fibre Works

Fibre internet is a high-speed connection that uses fibre-optic cables to send data as light signals. It’s much faster and more reliable than older options like ADSL or copper lines.

How It Works

Fibre cables are made up of tiny strands of glass or plastic that carry data using flashes of light. This allows for super-fast speeds and minimal delay, perfect for streaming, gaming, and working from home.

Here’s what makes up your fibre setup:

  • Fibre to the Home (FTTH): Fibre is installed directly into your home or apartment.
  • ONT (Optical Network Terminal): This device connects the fibre line to your router.
  • Router: Sends internet around your home using WiFi or Ethernet cables.

Why Fibre?

  • Fast Speeds: Great for everything from Netflix to online meetings.
  • Stable Connection: Doesn’t drop when the weather changes or the copper line degrades.
  • Low Lag: Ideal for gaming or live video calls.
  • Built for the Future: Easily handles growing household data usage.

Who’s Involved – FNO vs ISP

Getting fibre to your home is a team effort between the Fibre Network Operator (FNO) and the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that’s Webafrica.

What the FNO Does:

  • Installs and maintains fibre lines in your area
  • Handles all digging and outside installation work
  • Installs the ONT (the box inside your home)
  • Fixes problems on the fibre line itself

FNOs we work with include Vumatel, Openserve, Frogfoot, Octotel, and others.

What Webafrica Does:

  • Activates your fibre package
  • Supplies your WiFi router (for most packages)
  • Manages your account and billing
  • Offers support and helps troubleshoot issues
  • Logs any faults with the FNO on your behalf

If something goes wrong, you don’t need to chase anyone; just log a ticket with us, and we’ll deal with the FNO directly.
