How to Setup a PPPOE Broadband Connection

A PPPOE connection is used to authenticate your internet connection using a username and password.

It is commonly used when:

  • Connecting directly from a computer
  • Setting up certain routers
  • Troubleshooting connectivity issues

Important:
Creating a PPPOE connection directly on your computer is a key troubleshooting step. It removes your router from the setup, helping to confirm whether the issue is with the router or the line.

Fibre Network Operators (FNOs) require this test to be completed before a fault can be logged.

What You Need

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • Your PPPOE username
  • Your PPPOE password
  • A working fibre or network connection

Option 1: Set Up a PPPOE Connection on Windows

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Network & Internet
  3. Select Dial-up
  4. Click Set up a new connection
  5. Choose Connect to the internet
  6. Select Broadband (PPPOE)
  7. Enter your username and password
  8. Click Connect

Option 2: Set Up a PPPOE Connection on macOS

  1. Open System Settings
  2. Go to Network
  3. Click Add Service
  4. Select PPPOE
  5. Choose your Ethernet connection
  6. Enter your username and password
  7. Click Connect

Most customers will use PPPOE on a router rather than a computer.

Steps may vary slightly depending on your router:

  1. Log in to your router
  2. Go to Internet Settings or WAN Settings
  3. Select Connection Type: PPPOE
  4. Enter your username and password
  5. Save the settings

How to Use This Test

Once connected using PPPOE on your computer:

  • If the connection works:
The line is working, and the issue is likely with your router or its configuration
  • If the connection does not work:
The issue may be with the line, account, or network

This helps isolate the cause of the problem quickly.

Common Issues

Connection Fails

Check the following:

  • Username and password are correct
  • No extra spaces when typing
  • Your line is active

No Internet After Connecting

  • Restart your device
  • Make sure your Ethernet cable is connected directly to the ONT
  • Disable WiFi on your device to avoid conflicts

When to Use PPPOE

Use PPPOE when:

  • You are troubleshooting your connection
  • You need to test your line without a router
  • Your router requires manual setup

Key Takeaway

PPPOE is not just for setup. It is one of the most effective ways to test your connection.

By connecting directly from your computer, you can quickly determine whether the issue is with your router or the network.
