Quick guide – Using your new LTE Router (ZTE MF253 Router)

Webafrica offers uncapped internet services, but some packages may still have a Fair Usage Policy, also known as FUP.

A Fair Usage Policy helps protect the quality of the network for all customers. It is designed to manage extremely high usage on selected packages, especially during busy network periods.

What Is a Fair Usage Policy?

A Fair Usage Policy is a usage rule that may apply when a customer uses more than a set amount of data within a specific period.

This usage limit is called a FUP threshold.

If your package has a FUP and your usage goes above the threshold, your speed may be reduced during busy network times.

This helps make sure the network remains fair and usable for everyone.

Does FUP Apply to All Webafrica Packages?

No.

FUP does not apply to all Webafrica packages.

FUP usually only applies to selected Openserve uncapped packages. Other Fibre Network Operators may not have a FUP threshold on their Webafrica packages.

The easiest way to confirm whether FUP applies to your package is to check the package details when signing up or upgrading.

How Does the FUP Threshold Work?

FUP thresholds are based on your data usage over a rolling 30-day period.

This means your usage is not measured from the first day of the month to the last day of the month.

Instead, Webafrica looks at your usage over the last 30 days.

For example, if today is 15 June, your 30-day usage period is calculated from 16 May to 15 June.

This rolling period moves forward every day.

What Happens If I Go Over My FUP Threshold?

If you go over your FUP threshold, your speed may be reduced during busy network periods.

You may still get normal speeds outside of peak times if the network is not busy.

In simple terms:

  • If you are below your FUP threshold, your service continues as normal.
  • If you go over your FUP threshold, your speed may be reduced during busy times.
  • If the network is not busy, your service may still perform normally.
  • Your FUP status is based on your rolling 30-day usage.

Is Webafrica Shaping My Connection?

No, Webafrica does not shape your account.

Shaping is when certain types of internet traffic are prioritised over others. For example, some providers may prioritise browsing or streaming and slow down other types of traffic.

Webafrica does not shape your account. You can choose how to use your data.

Is Night-Time Usage Included?

On packages where FUP applies, usage between midnight and 6am may not count towards your rolling FUP threshold.

This means large downloads are best scheduled between midnight and 6am where possible.

How Can I Avoid Being Affected by FUP?

Here are a few simple tips:

  • Schedule large downloads between midnight and 6am.
  • Avoid running unnecessary downloads during peak times.
  • Choose a package that matches your household’s usage.
  • Upgrade to a package with a higher threshold if your current package is no longer enough.
  • Check whether a non-FUP option is available at your address.

What Is the Difference Between FUP and Capped Data?

FUP is not the same as capped data.

With capped data, your service may stop or need a top-up once your data runs out.

With FUP, your service remains active, but speeds may be reduced during busy times if your usage goes above the fair usage threshold.

Quick Summary

A Fair Usage Policy helps keep the network stable and fair for all customers.

FUP does not apply to every Webafrica package. Where it does apply, it is usually based on a rolling 30-day usage period.

If you go over your threshold, your speed may be reduced during busy times, but your service will remain active.

Webafrica does not shape your account.

Important Note

Webafrica packages, prices, thresholds, and terms may change from time to time. Always check the latest package information and terms before signing up, upgrading, or changing your service.
