If your VoIP calls keep dropping, it’s almost always a connection or network issue. Here’s how to fix it.
What This Looks Like
- Calls disconnect randomly
- Calls drop after a few seconds or minutes
- Calls end when switching apps or devices
Start Here
1. Check Your Internet Stability
VoIP needs a stable connection, not just a fast one.
- Run a speed test
- Check for drops or high latency
- Test on another device
👉 If your internet is unstable, fix that first.
2. Restart Your Setup
Switch off:
- Router
- VoIP device
Switch on:
- Router
- VoIP device
Let everything fully reconnect before testing.
Common Causes
Unstable or Congested Network
- Too many devices using the connection
- Streaming, downloads, gaming
✔ Reduce usage during calls
✔ Use wired connection where possible
WiFi Issues
- Weak signal or interference
- Device too far from router
✔ Move closer to router
✔ Switch to Ethernet if possible
Router or Firewall Settings
- SIP traffic being blocked
- NAT timeouts causing call drops
✔ Disable SIP ALG (if available)
✔ Restart router
Double NAT Setup
- Router connected to another router
✔ Use a single router setup
✔ Or configure bridge mode
Mobile Data / App Behaviour
If using a softphone:
- Calls may drop when switching apps
- Battery saving may interrupt calls
✔ Disable battery optimisation for the app
✔ Keep the app active during calls
Bandwidth Limits
VoIP needs consistent bandwidth:
- ±60 Kbps per call
If your line is busy, calls may drop.
Quick Test
Try this:
- Use a softphone on mobile data
👉 If calls work fine there, your home network is the issue
Still Dropping?
Have this ready before contacting support:
- Time of call
- Number called
- How long before it dropped
- Whether it happens on all calls or specific ones
Straight Talk
If calls were working fine before and suddenly start dropping, it’s usually:
- Network instability
- Router behaviour
- Or congestion
VoIP is sensitive. If your connection isn’t clean, it shows immediately.
