What is RICA?
The Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-related Information Act (RICA), is a South African law that came into effect on 1 July 2009, that requires owners of SIM and/or Data cards to register their details. These details include full names, identity number and/or company registration numbers, residential and business or postal address, whichever is applicable and a certified photocopy of the person’s identification document on which his or her photo, appear.
RICA prohibits the interception and monitoring of direct and indirect communications, and assist in the investigation, detection and prevention of crimes which treason, sedition, fraud and money laundering.
Why do you need to register?
RICA is a legal requirement and non-compliance will result in your SIM and/or Data card being placed in a RICA lock status, until registration is complete and approved.
How do I register?
You can send us your number, and we will send it off for approval. If your application is unsuccessful, we will then notify and stipulate the reasons why.
Once your application has been processed you can upload your RICA documents via your Voice Interface.
What do I need to register?
- The number
- Full name and surname
- Proof of identity – ID or passport number
- Proof of residential address (not older than three months)
